Get Going with External Storage Devices


Session Overview
In this session, students will learn examples of different external storage devices. They will learn what they do and why are they important. More imporantly, they will learn how to use one.

What is an external storage device and what does it do?
What are some examples of external storage devices?
What are some differences in the devices?
Why are they important?
How do you use one?


Materials
The following materials are used in this session:
-Laptops
-Projector
-various external storage devices
-computer cart



Resources
iPod, thumb drive, external hard drive, CD-R, CD-RW, SD card, Cross - Over Cable

INSTRUCTION (Typically lasts about 20% of session.)

Framing the Session - Dialogue

Scenario: Student comes into the computer depot balling his eyes out.

Student: "My computer has this ugly blue screen and I can't get it to show the desktop. What do I do?" The depot manager looks at the machine, turns it on and off.

Depot Manager: "Looks like we have to re-image it and I can't access the hard drive" The student becomes frustrated and begins to cry.

Student: "What about all my work?"

Depot Manager: "Did you back up?"
Student whines: "No..."

Depot Manager: "Well... you should have known better!"

What is the point of this?

Teaching

What are these devices? (show examples or slides)

What are some other uses of these devices?

iPod, External Hard Drive, Thumb Drive, CD-R, SD Card, Cross-Over Cable

Demonstrate the function of each.
1. Insert and find the storage device.
2. Move files from the device to the computer.
3. Move files from the computer to the device.
4. Safely remove the device.

Guided Practice
Do the same as the teaching part except have students follow along with you. Emphasize which devices they will use most often. Mainly thumb drive, external hard drive or iPod.


WORK TIME
Getting Started
You will have about 25-30 minutes to work on this. Your job is to back up all the data on this laptop cart.

Participant Activity
Step 1 - Break each group up into teams of 3
Step 2 - Distriubute even number of laptops to the groups
Step 3 - Create a folder on external and name it according to each computer number that you have
Step 4 - Copy the information from the my documents folder to the proper folder you created.
Step 5 - Repeat for each computer


Make sure you properly remove the device each time.

Facilitator Conferring
Circulate around the room and confer with participants. Make sure that you properly remove the device, troubleshoot storage space issues make sure that each team member is taking a role.

Take note of particularly good examples of work that can be presented during the Share.

SHARE (Typically lasts about 10–20% of session.)

Share
Ask one group to demonostrate how to back up data. Ask selected students to share particularly good examples of how they stored the files. Share items on the projector.
Lead a discussion about how this work addresses the focusing questions.
